SHILLONG: The demand for immediate cancellation of the state government’s direction to the Border Security Force (BSF) to set up their camp at Khliehriat, Jaintia Hills has gathered momentum with various social organisations of Jaintia Hills uniting to oppose this move.

After the Dorbar Pyllun Khliehriat (DPK), All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization (AJWYO)-central governing body, All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization (AJYWO) – East Jaintia Zone, the KSU Jaintia Hills District Unit has joined the wagon to demand immediate cessation of the government’s intention to allow the BSF to set up a camp at the heart of Khliehriat.

These social organisations including the DPK have opposed this move stating that this would bring about more problems than actually solving them.

The KSU has also slammed the Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh stating that instead of posting these so called security force in the border areas, the government has nodded to set up BSF camp in the hearts of Khliehriat which will create lot of disturbances especially among the young girls and women in the areas.

The organizations said that the BSF camp should be set up along the India-Bangladesh border and not at Khliehriat East, which is more than hundreds of kilometers from the international border.

They were of the opinion that the establishment of the BSF camp would only encourage influx of non-tribals in the area, which could eventually turn the microscopic tribal community to become minority in their own land. The union further informed that if the government failed to comply with their demands, the NGOs will be compelled to take up other measures to achieve their target.
