Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to train the chief of administration and police in all Maoist-affected districts of the state to counter the threat from the ultras.

The government has decided to train the Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs) and some other police and district administration officials on countering the Maoists.

“The Maoist insurgency is a new phenomenon here. So the government has sought help from experts in other Maoist insurgency-affected states for sharing of their expertise with the top level district officials here,” said a senior official of the Assam Police.

“The government has decided to bring in experts from other affected states, who will not only share their experiences with the ‘red rebels’ in their respective states but also hold workshops for the purpose of training the district and police administration in Assam,” said the official.

“We are going to hold the first such workshop very soon where top police and district administration officials of a few selected districts of Assam will participate. We are already in touch with experts who will be coming from states like Jharkhand, Chattishgarh and Orissa,” said the official.

Although the Maoist insurgency is stated to be at a very nascent stage in Assam, the red rebels have already expanded their wings to seven districts of the state.

The issue of Maoist insurgency was also the main topic of discussion during the recently-concluded conference of the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) in Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi while speaking at the conference, too, urged the DCs and SPs to not only increase their field visits but also asked them to involve themselves in the panchayati raj institutions to expedite developmental projects by properly implementing the various central government schemes.
