SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to temporarily suspend the load shedding, effective from 1.30am to 4am, following a slight improvement of the power scenario in the State.

The situation has improved after the second unit of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydel project has started generating power.

With the completion of the second unit, the total capacity of generation of power of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydel project has gone up to 84 MW.

“We have already started the generation. But it would take some time to formally inaugurate the second unit,” official sources said here on Saturday.

When asked about the completion of the third unit, official sources said the deadline which has been set to complete the third unit is July.

“With the completion of the third unit, the power scenario in the State would be further improved since we would have another 42 MW,” official sources said.

Replying to a query, official sources said that the water level at Umiam is still low.

“We are hopeful to receive a good rainfall in the coming months. If the level of the Umiam dam touches the maximum by October then there would uninterrupted power supply for the next four to five months,” official sources said.

When asked about the decision of withdrawal of the load shedding, he said that this is only a temporary arrangement.

It may be mentioned that during SSLC and HSSLC examinations, the State Government had decided to reduce the duration of load shedding from four hours to two and half hours.
