Shillong: Security has been beefed up in the entire East Khasi Hills district in view of the one-day office picketing on Monday.

The office picketing, jointly called by the KSU, FKJGP and HNYF, will be effective in the four districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi.

Schools and colleges have however been exempted from the purview of the office picketing.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal on Sunday said, “Police have been deployed all around to thwart any untoward incident on Monday and security in and around the city has also been beefed up.”

The NGO have called for the office picketing since the Government did not fulfill their demands to close down the voters’ facilitation cell at the offices of the Deputy Commissioner for registration of voters. They have also been demanding implementation of a new enrolment process.

The Deputy Commissioner also warned that anyone who tries to prevent office goers from attending their offices would be picked up by the police.

The earlier spate of night road blockade called by the NGOs last week witnessed stray incidents of arson, stone pelting, besides torching of several vehicles and properties.
