Inter-school cricket: Jail Road Boys, St Edmund’s in final

 SHILLONG: Jail Road Boys Higher Secondary School will take on St Edmund’s Higher Secondary School in the finals (senior category) of the 7th I.P. Das Memorial & 4th Babu Ondromoni Dkhar Memorial Cricket tournament.

Jail Road Boys edged past Buddha Vidya Niketan School by two runs to set up the summit clash with St Edmund’s, who defeated All Saints’ Diocesan Higher Secondary School by four wickets. Buddha Vidya Niketan’s defeat to Jail Road Boys can be termed as a major upset given their form in the tournament so far.

Earlier, electing to bat first, Jail Road Boys set up a total of 128 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 25 overs. Jaffar Iqbal scored 27 runs of 16 balls while Amiangshu Sen retained excellent figures of 4/19 of his five overs. In reply, Buddha Vidya Niketan were cruising towards the target and required 12 runs of the last four overs with four wickets in hand. However, the batters failed to give away the match to Jail Road Boys who pulled off a memorable victory. Amiangshu top scored with a steady 40 of 35 balls while Binay grabbed three wickets for 19 runs in five overs.

In the second semifinal, St.Edmund’s Higher Secondary put All Saints Diocesan to bat after winning the toss. The All Saints’ batters put up a decent total of 119 for the loss of nine wickets in 25 overs. Ankit Sharma held on to the innings with a slow but steady 36 of 64 balls while Praveen took two wickets for 16 runs of his five overs. Later due to heavy downpour, the match was reduced to 15 overs with a revised target of 72 for the team batting second. St Edmunds’ started steadily to reach the target in 14.4 overs for the loss of four wickets. Deepanjan scored 34 of 39 balls while Danish took two wickets for 15 runs in three overs.

The finals will be played on Wednesday.
