SHILLONG: A conglomerate of social organisations and representatives of sub-localities of Malki have registered a protest against Bawri Mansion owner Ramesh Bawri for erection of cemented wall by the side of the PWD road at Dhankheti causing obstruction to the pedestrians at large. In this regard, the conglomerate comprising of the KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, Rangbah Dong and Seng Kynthei of various sub localities of Malki on Monday submitted a memorandum to the local MLA BM Lanong and headman of Malki. The conglomerate stated that the matter of encroachment by Bawri came up in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly during 1983-84 when local MLA BM Lanong raised a discussion against construction of boundary wall by Bawri by encroaching into the Umshyrpi River.

They also mentioned that the then Revenue Minister DD Lapang informed the House that the Bawris have encroached on all sides of the PWD roads and that legal action would be taken on this matter, which however, did not take place due to reasons best known to the government.

“Now this mansion is causing obstruction to the pedestrians from Dhankheti point and also to the motorists who have to squeeze their vehicles through the narrow Dhankheti junction only because of the illegal encroachment of Bawri Mansion”, they stated.
