SHILLONG: Reiterating his government’s stand of going all out against Garo Hills based terror group Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday made a clarion call to its cadres to lay down arms even as he assured attractive packages for them provided they came forward to surrender.
“We would involve those cadres who surrender in various livelihood activities which have been initiated by the Government. The cadres, once they surrender, would be able to earn a decent living for themselves and their families with their involvement of the Government,” Dr Sangma said here on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister made it clear that the government had no intention of suspending the ongoing operation against the GNLA.
“The Government is very clear in its policy in tackling the militancy problem. We are committed to neutralize the GNLA,” he added.
Dr Mukul also stated there is no question of holding dialogue with the GNLA which is led by a person who is already a deserter.
The Chief Minister said that Sohan D Shira, who is leading the GNLA, had on several occasions cheated the Government.
“After the ANVC entered into a truce with the both the State Government and the Centre, Shira who was with the ANVC, tried to float a new militant outfit. After failing in his attempt, he sent feelers to the Government expressing his keenness to live a normal life,” Dr Sangma informed, adding that the Government agreed to withdraw all charges against Shira and allowed him to come over ground.
Despite this, he (Shira) got involved in various criminal activities and was arrested by the police, Dr Sangma said, adding that Shira was booked under the MPDA.
“He was supposed to serve time in jail. But then again he pleaded to the Government to pardon him since he wanted to reform himself. This time also the Government accepted his plea,” the Chief Minister stated.
“After being cheated on several occasions there is no question that the Government would have a soft corner for the GNLA commander-in-chief,” the Chief Minister said.
