SHILLONG: To check the malicious SMS campaign with communal overtures doing the rounds in West Garo Hills, the district administration has initiated steps to send counter text messages to the people to clear the air.

Putting an end to rumours mongering who had been circulating news that are suggestive of incidents that have communal colour to it through SMSs over the past few days in the aftermath of the bandh called by the GNLA, the district administration has stepped up vigil by sending counter messages to the people on the inaccuracy of such reports while strengthening its security.

“False rumours has been floating which has led to unnecessary tension between the two states,” Director General of Police N Ramachandran told reporters here on Wednesday while stating that the situation in Rajabala and surrounding areas of West Garo Hills is fully under control.

The police chief also said that there are several groups of communal minded people and organizations in the Assam-Meghalaya border area trying to instigate the people with a wrong and motivated picture of circumstances in which minor incidents have taken place.

He also informed that in this regard, police has arrested 12 persons suspected to be rumour mongers.

“I have been in constant touch with the DGP of Assam and the district administration of West Garo hills and SDOs of the two adjoining sub divisions and peace committees has been formed by the SDOs,” Ramachandran informed.

He further informed that to thwart any move by mischievous elements to vitiate the current atmosphere of peace, the district administration has decided to impose a curfew along the Meghalaya-Assam border areas.

However, claiming that the situation is under control, Ramachandran said the deputy commissioner of WGH has relaxed the curfew from 4 pm to 5 pm but the district administration will further review the situation to lift the curfew.
