Committee to discuss issue of registration
of voters in State, opposition of NGOs

SHILLONG: The State Government on Thursday issued a notification for constitution of a committee comprising of all political parties of the State to discuss matters relating to registration of voters in the electoral rolls under the continuous revision process under the direction of the Election Commission of India.
The committee would be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong as Chairman. The committee also includes as members, MPCC president DD Lapang, UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy, Leader of Opposition Conrad K Sangma (NCP), BJP president HS Syiemlieh, KHNAM (S) Pyndapborthiaw Saiborne, HSPDP leaders FL Nonglait and Swapna G Momin and Jopthiaw Lyngdoh, Commissioner and Secretary, Political Department as member secretary.
The committee would examine the instructions and guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India on the matter of voters’ registration process and methods and to suggest as to how these could be adapted to suit the local conditions and circumstances of the State to facilitate registration of genuine and eligible voters with least inconveniences to them.
The committee will further identify issues and concerns which are causing difficulties in the enrolment process and prepare a memorandum so that the matter could be taken up with the Election Commission of India.
The committee will submit its report to the State Government by May 17.
The committee was notified following a meeting of political parties of the State on Tuesday where they unanimously agreed to constitute a committee to discuss various pertinent issues with regards to the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India on registration of voters keeping in mind the sentiments of the people of the State.
