Babu Jeevon Roy remembered

 SHILLONG: Cultural programmes along with performances by children marked the Jeebon Roy Memorial Day which was observed at the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Jail Road here on Wednesday.

Many schools including KC Secondary School, St. Edmund’s, Pine Mount etc. took part in the event.

There was a traditional welcome for the audience with Additional Chief Secretary, PBO Warjri, present as the chief guest on the occasion. A book- The Main Ceremonies of the Khasi- written by Bijoya Dey Sawian was released during the occasion. “This book gives vivid details about the Khasi culture and it is a very pleasant book to be read”, Sawian said.

Meanwhile, the students of Jeebon Roy Creative Arts Academy (JRCAA) presented dance, songs, elocution etc. while the chairman of the institute SM Ali addressed the audience.

The Bharatnatyam Department, JRCAA presented a special dance performance while the special attraction of the day was a song presented by Wanlamphrang Nongklaw, a specially abled child from Jyoti Sroat School.

The chief guest addressed the audience saying, “It is very nice to see the children come out with their talents”. While lauding the contributions of Babu Jeevon Roy, Warjri talked on various topics ranging from punctuality, discipline, agitation, corruption, and adherence to the law and their relevance to the society. Warjri also encouraged the students saying, “I hope the children grow up to be honourable and contribute to the development of our society and country”.

The toppers of the SSLC Examination 2011 were felicitated by the chief guest and the prizes for the various competitions were also distributed. The vote of thanks was delivered by BK Dey Sawian who dedicated this special moment to (L) Sunita Marbaniang who was a distinguished member of the Jeebon Roy Memorial Welfare Institute and the Seng Samla.
