Tender floated for Nongstoin water supply project

 Shillong: The State Government has finally floated the tender for the Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme (NUWSS) package I on May 15.

The PHE department was compelled to float the tender following mounting pressure from the NGOs including the traditional heads of Nongstoin area over the delay in implementation of the project.

It has taken more than six months to float the tenders of the project, the foundation stone of which was laid on December 11, 2011 by PHE Minister Shitlang Pale.

“We have been informed by PHE Chief Engineer SK Sunn that the tender for much anticipated water supply scheme has been floated on May 15,” Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong (SKNS), Nongstoin Town chairman HH Marwein told reporters following their meeting with the PHE Chief Engineer here on Thursday.

When asked about the tentatively deadline to complete the project, Marwein said that as per the official statement, the deadline to complete the project is three years from the date of commencement of the project.

“A total amount of Rs 133.94 lakh has been sanctioned for the project,” the SKNS chairman said.

Stating that the source of the water supply scheme is from Kynshi River, he informed that a total number of 28 villages would be benefitted from this scheme.

As per the official notification, the tender which was floated by the PHE for the construction which would taken under NUWSS Package I are executing of turnkey job for pumping water supply system including water treatment plant, RCC reservoirs, laying of pipes and other construction works.

Black flag day in Nongstoin

A Joint Action Committee comprising of the KSU (West Khasi Hills), the FKJGP (West Khasi Hills), the Western Youth Federation (WYF) and the West Khasi Hills Students’ Union (WKHSU) have decided to observe May 23 as ‘black flag day’ in protest against irregularities in the Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme.

They also declared that if the State Government does not concede to their demands, they would be forced to go for a massive agitation.
