Itanagar: Apex students body All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Saturday said the decades old inter-state boundary problem with Assam could be resolved without further delay as both states and the Centre have Congress governments.

“The state governments of both the states as well as the Centre are making it (Assam-Arunachal boundary issue) a political issue instead of solving it permanently,” AAPSU president Takam Tatung told a Press conference here. AAPSU had sponsored a 24 hour state-wide shut down on Friday demanding early solution to the boundary problem, besides a logical conclusion to the Chakma-Hajong refugee problem, improvement of law and order.

The shut down was also a mark of protest against the state government’s alleged failure in producing a white paper on the financial position in Arunachal Pradesh.

“We never encourage bandh culture but we were compelled to do so because of the non-responsive attitude of the state government towards our genuine demands in the larger interest of the state,” Tatung said and added that AAPSU would sponsor a 72-hour state-wide bandh from June 6 if the government failed to meet its demands.

Tatung alleged that the government instead of controlling the law and order situation during the shut down had encouraged attacks on the union’s members.

Blaming parliamentary secretary in the home department, Gadam Ete of allegedly engineering an attack on one of the executive member of AAPSU at Aalo in West Siang district yesterday, Tatung demanded a statement from him about the incident. (PTI)
