Tura: With tension mounting on Assam-Meghalaya border over the kidnapping of two Rabha boys, allegedly by a Garo criminal gang recently, both the district administrations had a series of meetings to bring the situation under control.
After the two Rabha boys were kidnapped on Sunday from the Goalpara village of Dawaguri, under Krishnai police station by suspected Garo criminals, Rabha students carried out a rally which was followed by a bandh the next day to protest the crime.
Deputy Commissioners and police officials of both East Garo Hills and Goalpara met on Friday to ensure there were no Garo-Rabha conflicts in the border.
It may be mentioned that last year, several people were killed and many injured due to the Garo-Rabha conflicts.
The East Garo Hills DC, Vijay Mantri said that the magistrates from the District had also rushed to Kasikagra, which is a Garo village, under Krishnai in Goalpara to ensure that peace and normalcy prevails.
The general secretary of Garo National Council, Assam Zone, Thengsil Sangma urged the Goalpara DC and the police officials to ensure that innocent people are not harassed in the name of search operations by the security forces.
“We are concerned over the kidnapping incident, but the security forces are resorting to lathi charge and blank firing which have already created fear psychosis in the minds of the villagers of Kasikagra in Goalpara”, Sangma said in a memorandum.
