Shillong: NCP leader Purno Agitok Sangma’s decision to join the fray to contest for the post of President has so far found a lukewarm response from the State Congress.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang on Monday expressed his inability to extend support to the NCP leader, saying, “The decision to support any representative should come from the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

“At present, the MPCC cannot comment anything on this as the decision lies with the AICC and the UPA government,” Lapang said.

When asked about Sangma’s decision to contest for the post of President without approaching other political parties of the State, Lapang said, “I cannot comment on that as it is based on personal decision.”

Incidentally, the NCP leader might face competition from Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, who is also reportedly in the fray for the top post.

Meanwhile, the Achik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO), Tura, has extended its support to the former Lok Sabha Speaker for his decision to contest for the country’s highest office.

Stating that a Christian tribal leader has never been elected to the highest office of the country, the AYWO stated that it was high time that someone from the North East is elected this time.

The AYWO, however, stated that their support was meant for Purno and not his party (NCP).
