Shillong: The Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF)-War Jaintia Region (WJR) has decided to stage an indefinite hunger strike in front of the office of the chief project manager (CPM) of Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electric Project (MLHEP), Jaintia Hills from May 30 to protest against the non-regularization of the causal workers of the corporation engaged during 2002-2008.

Informing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, JYF WJRCS president Khongshling said “This is the third stage of agitation by the federation against the MeECL for keeping at bay the promises made by it for regularizing the casual workers of MLHEP”.

The federation has informed that as per documents acquired from the office of MLHEP, 90 causal workers engaged during

2001-2008 were to be regularized. But recently, the CPM, MLHEP has sent a proposal seeking regularsation of only 44 casual workers engaged during 2001-2005 by the end of this month.

“This constant change in agreement by the corporation will not be entertained and we will continue to oppose its decision till our demands are met”, Khongshling said.

Informing that the manpower required for MLHEP is 223, Khongshling said different posts were sanctioned but for these posts only 44 causal workers will be registered which is unfair to the other lot of casual workers.

When asked about the workers’ origin due to be registered, Khongshling said that majority of the workers are from Pdengshakap while only one was from Jowai.
