SHILLONG: MPCC president DD Lapang on Sunday urged the Union Government to intervene into the long-pending Assam-Meghalaya border dispute.

Lapang, during his meeting with Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home, Jitendra Singh, conveyed the need to settle the dispute amicably within the confines of constitutional provisions.

Singh stated that the matter had already been discussed during his meeting with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma.

He was hopeful that the matter would be resolved amicably.

The meeting at Lapang’s official residence was attended by Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, C&RD Minister Saleng Sangma, members of the State Mahila Congress Committee, members of the Congress youth wing and several MPCC members.

Singh informed that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has asked all the Ministers to visit the Northeast and extend all possible support in terms of paramilitary strength, funds and other mediums and to reassure the people of the Northeast that the Indian Government is committed to extending all support to them.

Singh also lauded the enthusiasm and energy of the youth in Meghalaya and the Northeast as a whole, which according to him cannot be seen in other parts of the country.

During his one-day visit to the State, the Union MoS also paid a visit to the North East Police Academy at Umiam and the Don Bosco Museum at Mawlai.
