NONGSTOIN: Mawtha draishan Assembly Constituency (AC) is gradually getting into the election mode with parties gearing up to announce the name of the candidates in the coming months.

As far as the Congress is concerned, there are two ticket aspirants– Irene Lyngdoh and Boldness Nongum– both stalwarts in the area fighting for the lone ticket. While Nongum is a former MLA of Mairang AC and the current President of the District Congress Committee, Lyngdoh is the former MLA of Pariong AC and the current MDC of the same area. It may be mentioned that Irene Lyngdoh (INC) had won the Assembly elections in 2003 from Pariong AC defeating her nearest rival Toberlain Lyngdoh (HSPDP) by a hairline margin of 29 votes. In the 2008 election, Lyngdoh suffered a major blow when she lost to Dr Advisor Pariong by 1100 votes. However, Lyngdoh won by a margin of 3200 votes in the MDC elections in 2009.

Nongum on the other hand had won from the Mairang AC in 2003. He also won in the MDC elections. In 2008, however, Nongum suffered a defeat against Metbah Lyngdoh by a massive margin of 1900 votes. Later, he also lost in the MDC elections against Rasor Rani by 400 votes. Going by the recent victories of Lyngdoh and the margin by which she has won, the INC ticket could go to her. However, nothing could be ascertained till the candidate is formally announced.
