New Delhi: An independent Delhi legislator, Bharat Singh, was in critical condition on Saturday after being shot at his office by three or four men who sped away in a car, police said.
His uncle Dharampal, who too was injured in the attack at around 8.30 am, was out of danger, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anil Kumar Ojha told IANS.
Bharat Singh, 35, elected from Najafgarh, took a bullet on his left shoulder and another in his abdomen.
The bleeding man was rushed to the Mata Chanan Devi Hospital at Janakpuri where he was immediately wheeled into an operation theatre.
“He has received four bullet injuries, one each in kidney and heart and two on arms and was put on ventilator after he was admitted here,” Dr G S Kochar of the hospital said adding, “He is out of danger now as the condition is established and he is fine now.”
“All the bullets have been taken out after operation,” the doctor informed.
He said Mr Singh after post-operation formalities will be admitted to ICU for fast recovery.
Bharat Singh, police said, was at his office in Sarangpur village when the attack took place.
“Three to four assailants entered the office and fired randomly injuring him critically. After committing the crime, they escaped,” Ojha said. Police suspect personal enmity may be behind the shooting.
Bharat Singh is the brother of municipal councillor Kishen Pahalwan, who reportedly faces several criminal cases, Ojha said.
BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra condemned the attack. “If an MLA can be shot during the day, it is a very, very serious situation. Delhi has become the crime capital.” (IANS)
