Church celebrates World Environment Day

You have heard of communion with bread and wine, but have you ever heard of a communion with flowers?

The Unitarian Church, Jowai on Sunday celebrated the World Environment Day by conducting a flower communion service.

Annually the Church celebrates the world Environment Day by conducting a special service entitled “Service in honour of mother nature” or Ka Jingiaseng kyntiew burom iaka mariang on the Sunday. This year for the first time in the history of the church, the day was celebrated by organizing a special service with flowers known as ‘Communion with Flowers’.

The Flower Communion was reportedly introduced in the United States in 1940 by Maja Capek, Norbert’s wife, and is widely adopted by the American Unitarian churches.

Essentially, a flower communion involves that each congregant brings a flower to be used in the service; congregates leave their flowers in a central location during the service. Towards the end of the service, the flowers are distributed or congregants come forward and choose a flower different from the one they brought.

The Flower Communion was held on Sunday which is the Sunday nearest to June 5, the World Environment Day to make people aware of the beauty of the nature which include human.

The elements used in the service are flowers the symbol of all that is good and beautiful in the creation and the nature.

Human being and everything in the World are part of that grand beauty of the nature and the communion cup symbolises the beauty that we all have and can respectfully share with one another said Mohrmen.
