Shillong skygazers in for rare astronomical treat

 SHILLONG: Skygazers of Shillong are in for a rare astronomical treat as the planet Venus moves across the face of the sun appearing as a small dark disc on Wednesday. Known as the transit of Venus, it is a phenomenon when the planet will be seen as a black spot travelling from one limb of the solar disc to the other.

According to the State Council of Science, Technology and Environment, the rare celestial transit in Shillong will begin at 3 hours.40 minutes 31 seconds and it will continue till 10 hours 21 minutes and 03 seconds.

To make the event viewable for the people of Shillong, the State Council of Science, Technology and environment (SCSTE) will organise a viewing camp at the Shillong Science Centre, NEHU from 7.30 am till 10.30 am.

The SCSTE is also making efforts to make Solar filters available from safe viewing of the transit and the same will be available from the Office of District Planning Officers of the respective districts.

The next transit of Venus will occur after a century in 2117.
