Guwahati: Incessant rainfall in catchment areas during the last week have led to a rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, inundating vast tracts of farmlands and villages in several districts of both Upper and Lower Assam.
The water-level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries was maintaining a steady rise and the affected districts include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Kamrup (Rural), Udalguri, Dhemaji and Dhubri, official sources said here on Friday.
The water level of the Brahmaputra was maintaining a rising trend following heavy rainfall in the Upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji with several villages affected and road communication affected in some part of these districts.
The worst affected villages are Dadhia, Sarisuti, Tengabari, Karomi and Mohmora at Chabua under Dibrugarh district with vast tracts of paddy fields inundated in flood water.
In Upper Assam’s Dhemaji district, flash floods at the Telijan river has created havoc in around 15 villages in Jonai sub-division with hundreds of hectares of farm land submerged under water.
The water level of Puthimari and Borolia was maintaining a rising trend in Rangiya sub-division of Kamrup (Rural) district and the worst affected villages include Khopnikuchi, Bhatkuchi, Kekuahati, Terekuchi and Halikuchi. Roads have been flooded at several places of the sub-division, paddy fields submerged and people of the affected villages forced to take shelter in highlands.
In Udalguri district of Lower Assam, over 30 villages have been inundated with affected people taking shelter in schools and in high grounds with the district administration providing relief. (PTI)
