SHILLONG: The breakaway faction of the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) has announced a ‘one-hour’ shutdown in the entire Garo Hills throughout next week, to protest against the alleged negligence of elected representatives of the region to address the general concerns of the people.
The shutdown, from 12pm-1 pm will begin from June 11, the ANVC (B) said in a statement issued on Saturday.
The stir was announced “as a means to unite the 24 legislators of Garo Hills, irrespective of their political affiliation to look into the power and water crisis looming large in the three districts of Garo Hills, the statement said.
The ANVC (B) said the 24 MLAs are politically divided and are more concerned about their political career, “while the needs of the people are totally ignored.”
“This stir continue for a week and if MLAs still do not respond, second phase will start from June 18,” the statement added.
It may be mentioned that the breakaway faction of the ANVC earlier had issued a ten-day deadline to the 24 legislators of Garo Hills to look into the problems of the common people.
The breakaway faction had also warned that if these problems were not addressed by the legislators they would not be allowed to enter Garo Hills.
