Guwahati: A child was drowned in a flooded pond and 50,000 people were affected in Assam as the level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries maintained a rising trend following incessant rains for the past week, official sources said on Thursday.

Incessant rainfall in the catchment areas during the last week have led to a rise in the water level of the rivers inundating vast tracts of farmlands and villages in ten districts of Lower and Upper Assam and Hailakandi in Barak Valley.

A four-year old child, identified as Babul Das, drowned in a heavily-flooded pond in Ouiguri area of Baksa district, the sources said.

The water-level of the Brahmaputra was rising at Dibrugarh, Nimatighat in Jorhat, Tezpur and Dhubri, while its tributaries Buridihing, Subansiri, Dikhow, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali and Kopili were also maintaining a steady rise.

The flood affected districts include Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Kamrup (Rural), Baksa, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Nagaon and Dhubri along with Hailakandi in the Barak Valley. Nearly 50,000 people have been affected by the current wave of floods. (PTI)
