Funds for new districts insufficient, says Conrad

TURA: Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma on Saturday came down heavily on Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, stating that fund of Rs 10 crore released for each of the four newly-created districts in the State by the MUA government was insufficient.

Speaking during an NCP function at Dakopgre, Conrad said that the fund allotted was only sufficient to develop a block, let alone a full-fledged district.

Stating that the minimum requirement of fund for efficient functioning of a district was Rs 200 crore, Conrad said that it was a hasty decision on the part of the Chief Minister to take up such a huge undertaking without any financial security.

The Opposition Leader opined that the brunt of the financial burden of running four additional districts would eventually fall on the respective governments that would come into power in the future.

“I am not saying that we do not need new districts but before any leader commits to such undertakings certain aspects like adequate funds and feasibility should be seriously taken into consideration,” Conrad said.

On the various schemes launched recently in the State, he stated that the Chief Minister was deceiving the people of the State by claiming certain centrally-sponsored schemes as Chief Minister’s schemes.

Alleging that there were not enough funds with the State Government, Conrad stated that it was irrational to launch any new scheme if the same cannot be implemented.
