Amroha: Rejecting any deal with the Samajwadi Party, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh today said his party has not made any sort of promise to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in lieu of his support to Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature for the post of President.
“SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav has supported Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature because he is a capable and experienced leader with an ability to take everyone along,” Singh told reporters here.
The Congress has not entered into any kind of deal with the SP, he clarified. Trinamool Congress leader Mamta Banerjee should also support Mukherjee for the coveted post in the similar manner, Singh added.
Yadav had earlier proposed the name of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and two others — former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and former President A P J Abdul Kalam, as he felt Congress appeared to be hesitant in naming Mr Mukherjee for the President’s post.
Asked whether his party would join the UPA, the SP chief had replied that “there is no question of it.”
The Congress general secretary was here to inaugurate a mobile dispencery for the public.
Asked about the party’s return in UP, Mr Singh said it was in the hands of the people.
Meanwhile well placed sources on Sunday claimed that it was pressure which compelled the Congres to suppot Mukherjee as the presidential candidate. (Agencies)
