NONGSTOIN: The HSPDP on Monday named Dr Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait as the party’s candidate from the Mawthadraishan Assembly Constituency for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Dr Nonglait’s candidature was finalised in a meeting chaired by HSPDP vice president (Mawthadraishan Circle) at Mairat in West Khasi Hills.

Speaking on the occasion, KP Pangniang, MDC Rambrai Circle, said that Dr Nonglait was the appropriate candidate for the constituency while adding that it was only because of her untiring efforts that three days ago, HSPDP was recognised as a regional party by the Election Commission of India and its election symbol, the Lion, was also accepted.

Pangniang also rubbished claims that the party was nearing extinction and would go into oblivion after its president Hopingstone Lyngdoh quits. “Many people in the constituency have left their parties to join HSPDP. The party is as strong as ever,” he said.

Meanwhile, showering praise on Dr Nonglait, Nongstoin MLA Hopingstone Lyngdoh and HSPDP president (central body) compared her to Phan Nonglait, the freedom fighter, who would fight for the rights of the people in the Constituency.

Hopingstone also said that the HSPDP would secure majority in West Khasi Hills in the upcoming elections.

Toeing the HSPDP line, Dr Nonglait said that she was against uranium mining in the district. “It was only because of the presence of HSPDP candidates in the coalition that uranium mining bill could not be passed,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dr Advisor Pariong, vice president, HSPDP (central body) was conspicuous with his absence.

“If I would have been the party president, a anti-defection law would have been filed I would have filed against him (Pariong) for abandoning the party,” Dr Nonglait said.
