TURA: In run-up to Meghalaya’s Olympic Day, a two-day Boxing Awareness Camp organised by the Meghalaya Boxing Association (MBA), Shillong, in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, got underway on Thursday at Tura Indoor Sports Hall, which featured renowned pugilists from the state demonstrate various techniques.
Inaugurating the camp, GHADC CEM, PK Sangma announced that he would donate Rs 50,000 for the promotion of boxing as a major sport in the region through similar awareness camps.
He stated that an association on the lines of the MBA needs to be established in the region topromote the sport, as it is a new discipline in this part of the country.
MBA President John F Kharshiing said that the focus of the awareness camp was on the youth as there was potential in the younger generation.
Urging the GHADC CEM to provide land for a boxing academy in Tura, Kharshiing also requested the Tura Sports Association (TSA) to promote boxing in the region.
He announced that free coaching would be given to aspiring pugilists starting Friday.
“We will hold the District and State Boxing Championships very soon and those keen on taking up boxing will be given three weeks of free coaching,” Kharshiing said.
TSA President, Billy kid Sangma assured that the Association would provide land for the boxing academy, but before anything concrete could be taken up, an association dedicated to promote boxing had to be formed.
