Shillong: Tragedy struck at the Raj Bhavan on Monday when six-year-old Anjali Kumari Singh drowned after she accidentally fell into a foundation pillar hole dug for construction of the Governor Staff quarters.

The deceased is the daughter of Radhe Shyam Singh who works as a gardener in the Raj Bhavan.

Police informed that the girl had fallen into the pillar hole after she accidentally slipped while playing in the vicinity.

The girl’s father rescued his daughter when he saw her drowning, police informed.

“The girl was still alive when she was rescued by her father. But on reaching the Shillong Civil Hospital doctors declared that she was already dead,” police said.

Police also informed that relatives of the girl have sought for exemption of the post mortem.

Meanwhile, those who witnessed the tragic incident have blamed the contractors for the death of the young girl.

“The contractors should have put up some kind of barricade around the foundation holes since the construction is taking place very close to the staff quarters.

“Recklessness on the part of the contractors has led to the loss of a precious life,” they added.
