JOWAI: The Public Works Department is expected to clear the debris from landslips on National Highway NH-44 (Jowai-Malidor Road) by Thursday morning.

A section of NH-44 has been totally cut off since 3 am on Tuesday due to several major landslides causes by incessant rainfall in Jaintia hills district over the last three days.

PWD officials through their contractors have engaged four JCBs including a Chain JCB to clear up the highway.

“We should have been abled to clear the road today but due to another major landslide – the biggest one in the area that occurred this morning – we have not been able to clear the highway today,” EE PWD, Central Jowai Division, Sainia Kyndiah said, adding that they expect to clear the highway by Thursday morning.

Villagers from the area informed that the rainfall had stopped on Wednesday, though not completely. “The rain stopped at around 11 am and we hope that if there is no more rain, the PWD should be able to clear the road by Thursday evening,” said RM Gympad of Lumshnong village.

It may be mentioned that around 25 landslides occurred all over Jaintia hills particularly in Sunapur stretch of NH-44 on Tuesday which has completely obstructed vehicular movement on this stretch of the highway.
