Guwahati: Congress legislator from Borkhola constituency in South Assam Rumi Nath and her second husband Jackey Zakir were seriously injured when an irate mob stormed into a hotel room in Karimganj town in Friday night.
A team of police personnel from Karimganj Police Station had tough time in rescuing the couple from the hotel and shift them first to Hospital and then to Guwahati. The MLA and her husband were treated by a team of doctors in Guwahati Medical College Hospital here.
Police informed that a mob numbering over 400 gathered in front of Hotel Nakshatra in Karimganj town, first shouted slogans against the MLA and threw stones before barging into their room and assaulting Nath as well as her new husband Jackie Zakir. The couple sustained injuries in the incident.
Several police personnel were also injured when the mob pelted stones at the men in uniform trying to disperse them. The crowd later shifted focus to the Karimganj police station where the couple was first shifted to.
“A large group of angry people barged into our hotel room and assaulted us severely before police came to our rescue,” Nath said from her hospital bed in Guwahati.
The police have registered three cases in Karimganj police station in connection with the incident of assault on the MLA and her husband. While one was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the legislator , one was filed by a couple of local news reporters who too were assaulted by the mob. A third case of assaulting policemen and preventing them from performing their duty has been also registered.
Legislator Nath was hogging headlines of for having married her facebook boyfriend Jackey without obtaining a proper divorce from her first husband Rakesh Singh, who had filed a case with police saying she had been kidnapped. She, in fact, had disappeared with her new husband on May 21 last only to resurface in Guwahati on June 2 last.
She said that she had gone to neighbouring state of Tripura with her new husband and claimed that her divorce papers were ready. She admitted that she had already tied the knot with Jackie Zakir, a government employee
