Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man is off

to a strong start at the domestic box

office, where its expected to gross upward of $27 million on Tuesday as the Fourth of July holiday frame gets underway.

Bullish box-office observers believe the reboot starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone could even earn in the low-$30 million range for the day based on early returns.

Spidey’s tally includes a solid $7.5 million in Monday midnight runs, the second-best showing of the summer behind fellow superhero tentpole The Avengers.

Estimates for Spider-Man’s six-day opening vary, with Sony projecting a conservative debut in the $110 million to $120 million range.

Based on Tuesday’s business, others believe it open between $120 million and $140 million.

Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb, did especially big business in Imax midnight runs as fanboys rushed to see the film in their favorite format. Of the $7.5 million, Imax brought in $1.2 million from 300 screens for a location average of $4,000.

The 3D tentpole performed on par with Iron Man 2, the first Twilight film and the latest Star Trek in terms of its midnight gross.

Spider-Man already has earned north of $50 million overseas, where it opened in select territories last weekend. (Agencies)
