SHILLONG: In an attempt to ease the traffic congestion in the city, the State Government would soon be launching a number of school buses on a pilot basis.
“We would be launching few school buses in the city on a pilot basis,” Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters.
According to Ampareen, the Government had invited several schools to avail the school buses, while adding that the department had even convened a meeting in this regard where heads of various educational institutions in the city were invited.
‘But finally only St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School came forward to avail this offer. We would be giving a total number of five school buses to the school,” she informed.
The Urban Affairs Minister expressed disappointment that only a single institution had come forward to take advantage of this noble initiative of the Government.
‘I was hoping that more schools would come forward since it is an attempt on the part of the Government to ease traffic congestion in the city,” she said.
Stating this is the only place where people are not receptive to the idea of sending their children in school buses, she said that this trend is followed everywhere else.
“In fact, the Government has been able to get a total number of 20 school buses through the 12th Finance Commission. But 15 buses would now remain unutilized,” the Urban Affairs Minister added.
Ampareen was also confident that once the school buses provided to St. Anthony’s School become a hit then every other school would come after us to provide them the buses.
