Shillong: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has stated that the country should be proud to have an opportunity to elect a person of the stature of former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to the country’s highest post.

“It is a really proud moment for us that a personality of his stature has been nominated by the UPA leadership to occupy the highest constitutional office of the country. I do not think there is any other leader in the country who has exhaustive knowledge about the people in this part of the country with its huge diversity and associated problems and challenges,” Dr Sangma said during an interaction between Mukherjee and Congress chief ministers, MLAs, MPs and leaders of certain regional political groups in Guwahati on Friday. “I urged upon the members of the Legislative Assemblies of the North East to lend their support to Mukherjee,” the Chief Minister added.

Meanwhile, MPCC president DD Lapang said that there is no better candidate than Mukherjee to occupy the country’s top constitutional post.

“He (Mukherjee) has proved his efficiency in whatever capacity he has occupied. The UPA leadership has taken the right decision to nominate Mukherjee for the President’s post,” Lapang said.

He also urged the various political leaders of the region to give their full support to the UPA Presidential nominee.
