Assam: Flood situation improves; toll at 121

Guwahati: The situation in flood-hit Assam remains grim with the toll rising to 121 even as water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing above the danger mark is showing a receding trend in the affected districts.

The water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries were showing receding trend following cessation of rainfall in most of the 27 affected districts but it is still above the danger mark, officials said here on Friday.

Altogether 105 people have died due to the floods and 16 in landslides caused by incessant rainfall, while 16 people are still missing, they said.

An estimated 22 lakh people have been affected in the worst floods in recent years, causing large-scale devastation in 2,809 villages in 27 of the 28 districts of the state. The current wave of floods has devastated the world famous Kaziranga National Park where more than 540 animals, including 13 rhinos, have perished, officials said.

The situation in the world’s largest river island Majuli was also grim. Almost the entire island is submerged and over 75 families have been rendered homeless due to heavy floods and unabated erosion.

Sixteen people are still reported to be missing. Nearly 3.50 people in close to 1000 villages remained affected by floods till date.

As many as 512 relief camps in 12 districts, sheltering over 2.75 lakh population, were still operational in 12 districts.Relief operations were being continued by district administrations, with the help of other agencies, including security force (Agencies)
