Not an inch of land will go to Assam, says HDR Lyngdoh

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Worried over the ongoing fast-unto-death at Langpih seeking a solution to the boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam, the State Government will send a letter of assurance to Pynskhemlang Nong-shlong, who is spearheading the agitation, on Tuesday.

“We would dispatch the written assurance through the West Khasi Hills district administration,” Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh said while speaking to reporters here on Monday.

On demand of the people of Langpih to upgrade the existing police outpost, he said the Government is looking into this demand.

He said the Government would ensure that not even an inch of the land which belongs to the State would go to Assam.

The fast-unto-death led by a 28-year-old youth, Pynskhemlang Nongshlong, started on June 30 at Langpih, an area sandwiched between West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya and Kamrup district of Assam.

During the visit of a high-level delegation led by Home Minister to Langpih on Friday, Pynskhemlang stuck to his guns and said he would withdraw the fast only when the Government gives him a written assurance that the boundary issue would be resolved.

Our Nongstoin correspondent adds: Meanwhile, four NGOs from West Khasi Hills district — KSU, FKJGP, Western Youth Federation (WYF) and the West Khasi Hills Student Union (WKHSU) — on Monday held a rally at Nongstoin to protest the silence of the Government on the fast-unto-death led by Pynskhemlang Nongshlong.

Speaking at a public meeting later, the general secretary WKHSU West Khasi Hills District D Sun said the blood of the four people would not be go in vain and the government should find ways and means in resolving the long pending boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.

“Four innocent people had lost their lives on 14th May 2010,” the KSU (West Khasi Hills) president John Fischer said adding “How many more have to be sacrificed to free Langpih from the clutches of Assam?”

Palwanbor Syiem, president of FKJGP (West Khasi Hills) lambasted Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma for his indifference to the Langpih issue.

He said Dr Sangma had been more interested in the tiny squabbles with PA Sangma. He made a clarion call to the people of Meghalaya to unite and support Pynskhemlang in his noble cause.
