SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has taken a dig at some politicians and political parties for attempting to politicize the vexed inter-State boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

“Some politicians and political parties have asked the Government not to hold any talks with Assam on the vexed inter-State boundary issue. Making such an appeal to the Government is an indication that they are trying to politicize the matter,” Dr Sangma said at a function in Upper Shillong on Saturday.

With elections round the corner, everyone is now talking about the problems in Langpih, the Chief Minister said.

“But I am sure after the election the Langpih issue would again be forgotten,” he added.

Dr Sangma also claimed that despite all odds, the present Government has made efforts to support Meghalaya’s claim on the disputed areas with adequate documentary evidences compiled under the supervision of the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister.

Dr Sangma also highlighted developmental works in Langpih, saying that after assuming charge as the Chief Minister, he had ensured that the road to Langpih was built and a police outpost was set up in the area.

“When I wanted to visit Langpih after the firing incident in 2010, I was really shocked when I was suggested to go via Assam. Even though we are claiming Langpih to be ours, it is ridiculous that we still have to go through Assam. After this, we immediately ordered construction of the road in 2010-11 and now everyone is going to Langpih directly,” Dr Sangma stated.

“In 1979 the police outpost was withdrawn from Langpih but we have now put up a police outpost for the security of the people residing there,” the Chief Minister said, adding, “this government is not just speaking but is also doing things as is visible on the ground for everyone to see.”
