SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Saturday said that the State is re-strategising its investment policies by prioritising sustainable projects and strengthening the natural resource base. Dr Sangma was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Upper Shillong Water Supply Project at Sanmer Secondary School here.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the traditional heads of the State viz. Syiem, Sordar and headmen to cooperate in protecting the rich natural resources of the State particularly in the catchment areas which are the main sources of water.
The Upper Shillong Water Supply Project has been funded by the Ministry of DONER under the NLCPR scheme for Rs 33.2 crore. The water supply scheme which is scheduled to be completed by 2014 is expected to cater to 36 villages and 15 localities under Mylliem constituency. PHE Minister, Shitlang Pale, Forest & Environment Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Parliamentary Secretary, P W Khongjee and KHADC, CEM, Pynshngainlang Syiem among others were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, urging all sections of the society to cooperate, Dr Sangma said that the public representatives are also responsible in creating awareness among the people about the initiatives taken by the Government to improve the livelihood of the people particularly those in the rural areas like the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Programme which is intended to provide employment opportunities to the people and ensure healthy economic activity in the State.
Dr Sangma also informed that similar projects will also be proposed by the State Government for funding by the Mininstry of DONER at Mawsynram and Sohra.
Shitlang Pale, P Tynsong, P Syiem and Principal Secretary PHE Department P W Ingty also spoke on the occasion. The meeting was presided over by Mylliem MLA, R V Lyngdoh.
