Although three precious lives have been lost due to the reckless driving of truck drivers in and around the city, yet the truck drivers are least bothered about the importance of others lives.

Though the Shillong Traffic police have made the entire stretch from Civil Hospital junction to Barik point a 24 hour one way, yet there are many truck drivers who barge into the one way road at night as well as in the early hours when cops are not posted there. Some eye witnesses say that in the morning at around 5 am they saw many truck drivers who were driving at a phenomenal speed in the one way zone without caring for others lives.

Earlier, three persons including a child were killed in the same stretch when their bike collided head on with a truck at Barik Point since the driver was drunk.

It seems there is no end to the reckless driving of truckers in the city,” the eye witness quipped.

The STP has been kind enough to post two of its cops in the Barik point as well as Civil Hospital junction till late night to avert any kind of confusion among the drivers about the traffic rule.

When contacted, additional Superintendent of police (traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said, “If we find any vehicle entering the one way zone then we would not hesitate to take any stringent action on them…”

Talking about the recklessness of truckers, two truck drivers were even seeing indulging in a race at 7 am in the morning when the roads of Shillong starts to get busy.

“All small vehicle and two wheelers on that time gave them a way to save their lives from the high handedness of trucks,” another eye witness said who was riding a motor cycle in the wee hours of the morning.
