18 new police stations in State

SHILLONG: The State Government has sent a proposal to the Union Home Ministry to set up 18 new police stations and to strengthen the manpower in different police stations in the State.

Addressing media persons after a meeting of the State Security Commission, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that under the proposal the State Government has sought for categorization of the police stations in the State.

“In the ‘A’ category police stations there will be 80 constables, 9 head constables, 7 Sub-Inspectors and 1 Officer in-Charge, while in the ‘B’ category police stations, there would be 40 constables, 8 head constables and 6 Sub-Inspectors,” the Chief Minister stated.

The total budget estimate of the entire proposal is Rs 442 crore to be funded by the Union Government.

He also informed that the State Government would create eighteen new police stations across the State of which eight would be in the ‘A’ category.

Reacting to a query, Dr Sangma informed that these new police stations would be set up in the district headquarters, but added that the State Government has been holding consultations with the Union Home Ministry on the location of the new police stations.

The meeting of the State Security Commission discussed at length the steps required to strengthen the police stations besides providing better internal security apparatus with an aim to provide better sense of security among the people.

The meeting also dwelt on ways and means to bring transparency in the recruitment process of the State Police department.

Besides, the Chief Minister, the meeting was attended by Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma and other senior police officials.
