New Delhi: As a good will gesture India will hand over the remains of Bangladeshi freedom fighters (Mukti Yodhas), who had been laid to rest on its eastern frontier in 1971 with full state honours.
The Indian states on the Indo-Bangaldesh border which acted as sanctuary for thousands of Mukti Bahini guerillas then have also assured of their assistance in this regard. The state governments are now appointing officers for the mission.
The officers will keep in touch with the Bangladesh delegation and work together when the delegation arrives. He said at first would be the identification and then repatriation of the remains.
A delegation from the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs of Bangladesh had handed over a list of places along the Indian border where many martyrs had been buried. The delegation had also visited the Shillong and other important towns of the North East.
The Indian government had returned back the remains of independence war martyr Bir Shrestha Hamidur Rahman from Tripura few days ago. He died fighting the Pakistani soldiers during the liberation war but was buried in Ambasa village of Tripura like 2416 of his compatriots.
Incidentally, India had also allowed United States to excavate the remains of their martyrs who died fighting the Japanese during the World Wars in North East.
