SHILLONG: The Lawbah Border Area People’s Joint Action Committee (LBAPJAC) has demanded the upgradation of the Mawsynram Block into a Civil Sub Division.

In the memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma at Mawsynram on Friday, the JAC chairman Rangsan Sohmat maintained that despite being one of the oldest blocks in the State, the Mawsynram Block is still far behind in terms of development and other amenities even as there are there are a total of 166 villages with a total population of around 53,780 within the vicinity of the Block.

“The people of the area have been aspiring to see the block upgraded into a Civil Sub Division for long with the hope that things would improve after the up gradation,” the JAC chairman said while adding that this upgradation will also open opportunity for the local youth to get some employment and people will not have to travel all the way to Shillong for small official works.

“At present, the villagers are facing a lot of inconvenience since they have to bear huge travel expenses. With majority of them (villagers) involved in agricultural activities, valuable time is also lost travelling to-and-fro to Shillong,” Sohmat said.

Stating that Sohra has been upgraded to a Civil Sub-Division office long time back, he said that they are really disappointed at the indifferent treatment met out to Mawsynram Block which is farther from the State capital when compared to Sohra.

It may be mentioned that the JAC submitted the memorandum during the function to launch new Government scheme on ‘Women Empowerment through Financial Inclusion’.
