Editor,
This year, like last year and the year before that many students will not be able to get into Post Graduate courses outside the State and region due to delayed publication of results. This is the oldest story in the book that the prestigious North Eastern Hill University, Meghalaya announces their under-graduate results much later than most of the other universities of the country. Late to the extent that most universities have not only completed enlisting students for Post Graduate courses but have started their academic year as well.
Every year hundreds of students are forced to give up their dreams for a Master’s degree or a job placement and take the painful ‘one year break’ simply because NEHU declares its results very late. The question that I as a student would like to put forward is, does NEHU really care? Is the University even trying? Or Are they going to continue murdering the ‘futures’ of thousands of students each year?

Students in distress!
Editor,
I’m a student in the department of Bio-Chemistry, NEHU. We students and research scholars have been facing a lot of problems in the past few years in our department because a particular faculty does not take classes most of the time since he has other responsibilities. Research scholars have to wait for long hours in the lab to be supervised in order to complete their assignments or thesis. What’s upsetting is that at times we have to wait for 4 to 5 hours and even late in the evening for that concerned faculty to come but have often been disappointed. This has led to a precarious situation as far as our academic future is concerned. Out of curiosity we tried to find out why this faculty member is unable to fulfil the academic duties. We have come to know that apart from being one of the senior-most in the department he is also chairing several administrative bodies in the University. This is causing a major problem for us students as well as research scholars because the concerned faculty has to attend several meetings daily and forgets that his main responsibility is to teach and supervise his students. Why should an academician be involved in administrative work at the cost of his teaching? Why can’t administrative bodies be looked after by administrative personnel? Academicians must concentrate on teaching which is their primary duty.

Official misbehaves
Editor,
The Directorate of Census Operations, Meghalaya, Shillong has become very volatile and tense. as the Assistant Director and Head of office is misbehaving with every staff every now and again. Recently he misbehaved with an elderly lady. In our society we hold women in very high esteem this person has defied all norms. The morale of the staff is very low at this point. The 2011 census was undertaken successfully under the supervision and able guidance of Mr K L Tariang, IAS, retired on superannuation on 31.03.2012. After his retirement, no controlling officer has been posted till date. Taking advantage of the absence of any controlling officer since April this year the Assistant Director has become very powerful and is abusing his power. The Government should post a Director immediately.

Defaulting LPG supplier
Editor,
Through your esteemed daily I wish to draw the attention of the Deputy Commissioner(Supply), East Khasi Hills and the Oil India Marketing Division, Noonmati etc, to the complete failure of Longkmie Gas Agency, Laban to serve the consumers. In the last four months the said Agency has been supplying LPG cylinders after 2/3 months from the date of booking when the other LPG distributors of Shillong are supplying cylinders to consumers every 28 days. This Agency is violating tile terms of agreement with Oil India by supplying cylinders after 2 months from the date of booking which is arbitrary and illegal. Most of the subscribers of Longkmie especially in Rilbong, Burnside and Maila compounds had to switch over to kerosene stove, electric stove and fire wood for daily cooking. Further, the said Agency due to its corporate greed and proximity to the former DC (supply) Shillong. had acquired a large area namely, Laban, Kench’s Trace, Rilbong, Dunoon Compound, Zig-Zag Road etc, inhabited by about 40,000 people. As such Longkmie Gas Agency is unable to cater to the needs of such a huge population with their limited resources, poor infrastructure, lack of proper management and a rickety fleet of second-hand small vehicles.
Ironically this Agency also demands the original documents during the time of LPG booking in clear violation of the OIL norms. Of course, VIPs and high officials are exempted from such harassment. The said Agency also refuses to accept Court affidavits submitted by the subscribers which is a contempt of court. If challenged before a Court of law the owner of the concerned Gas Agency, will be behind bars for showing disrespect to the court. Finally, what is the remedy before the concerned authorities? Let some other agency apply for LPG dealership for Rilbong – Kench’s Trace area. We are told that such an application is pending before the DC (Supply) Shillong. That petition should be speedily disposed off with a favourable recommendation to OIL Marketing Division, Noonmati. Longkmie Gas Agency or their agents should not be permitted to open a new Gas Agency in Madan Laban area as they have already failed to meet the needs of consumers. There should be a thorough investigation of the said Agency, by the DC (Supply), Shillong, and OIL and if serious anomalies are found then the case may be handed over to CBI in public interest, and suitable action should be initiated as per law.
Yours etc.,
Md I Hossain
