Agartala: Maj General Satish Dua has been appointed as the first Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East) to oversee the Counter Insurgency (CI) operations in three northeastern states- Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura.

This newly raised HQ will control all operations of Assam Rifles and also coordinate with the operations of other security forces in these states.

Security analysts feel that raising the new HQ will add new impetus to counter terrorist operations in these states, since the terrorist groups are known to cross border from one state and operate in a different state.

During his maiden visit to the state he held a number of meetings to ascertain security situation in the state and emphasised need for a coordinated effort to counter recent increase in activity of some terrorist groups.

The General Officer met Governor, Dr DY Patil on July 20 and assured him that 21 Sector Assam Rifles is fully prepared and taking adequate measures to ensure a conducive security environment in the state.

The general also has a deep understanding of the external dynamics of various aspects of security by virtue of having served in Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia as Indian Defence Attaché.
