SHILLONG: The Arts and Culture Department is planning to set up a music academy at Mawdiangdiang by next year.

Talking to media persons here in the city on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong said the process is going on to construct the music academy at the earliest.

“We have held several meetings with local experts on the courses to be imparted in the proposed academy,” Lanong, who holds Arts and Culture portfolio, told reporters here on Monday.

The land for the institute in Mawdiangdiang has already been allotted to the department, he said adding an earlier exercise by the Arts and Culture department has indicated that around Rs 40 crore is required for the project and the department has the required fund for the project.

The move is expected to provide the much required boost to those who want to make a career in the field of music.

The Government plans to invest on a phased manner on the academy.

According to Lanong, degree and master degree level music courses would be imparted in the proposed academy.

The Arts and Culture Minister also informed that the department plans to hold a mega state level seminar in September whereby even traditional music including the drum beating training will be provided to the participants.

Earlier the State Government had urged the Centre to set up a world class International University of Music in the state. However, the Rs 100 crore proposal was rejected by the Central Government on the ground that the state already has a Central university i.e NEHU.
