SHILLONG: The State Government has initiated investigation to verify the authenticity of reports of re-emergence of proscribed militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) which was highlighted on a social networking site on Sunday.

Director General of Police (DGP), N Ramachandran, on Monday said “We are looking for specific and positive information with supporting and clinching evidences to verify the claims of the HNLC or whichever organisation it is.”

According to Ramachandran, the report is ‘mostly speculative’ depending on an update on the social networking site – Facebook – which may have attracted the attention of the local media.

However, he made it clear that Police is investigating into the details and a statement would be issued only after substantial evidence.

The outlawed HNLC, had on Sunday, claimed on Facebook that it has re-emerged with cadres who are well trained in handling sophisticated weapons and have the ability to operate from any kind of terrain.

The outfit had also claimed responsibilities for Saturday’s exchange of fire with Jaintia Hills Police at Kongung village and the recent attack on Lumdiengjri Police Station.
