NONGSTOIN: UDP has received a boost when a senior Congress leader Dr Jova Marak along with her around 400 supporters joined the party.

Dr Marak formally joined the UDP in a public meeting at Athiabari in the presence of UDP’s West Khasi Hills district president K Lyngkhoi and general secretary.

Dr Marak had resigned from the Tura City Mahila Congress Committee recently.

Sources, however, said she was expelled from the party following her absence in one of its meetings. Later, Dr Marak had refuted it saying that she was not informed about the meeting.

Welcoming Dr Marak to the party fold, Lyngkhoi said the party has found the right candidate to contest from Rambrai-Jyrngam in the 2013 Assembly election. Dr Marak is all set to get UDP ticket to contest from Rambrai-Jyrngam.

He said that her name has been forwarded the party chief Dr Donkupar Roy for clearance and the formal announcement would be made shortly.

Unhappy at leaving Congress of which she had been an active worker for the last several years, Dr Marak said she was left with no choice “since the struggle for Congress ticket was getting uglier than expected.”

The UDP chief is expected to visit Rambrai on August 16 in a bid to strengthen the party there. During his visit he would also inaugurate the UDP office of Rambrai.
