SHILLONG: The technical snag which occurred in the first unit of the Myntdu Leshka Hydel Project is expected to be rectified by August this year.

Earlier, the snag was supposed to be fixed in July but for reasons that are unclear the first unit (42 KW) is yet to be repaired.

It may be mentioned that the Stage I of the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electric Project (MLHEP) was commissioned in the month of March this year and within three months the project has run into rough weather.

Chief Project Manager Elias Lyngdoh informed on Tuesday that the first year of any project is considered as ‘Defect Liability period’ aimed at tracking out faults and other problems that might occur in the project.

It is learnt that the problem occurred due to the breakdown of a thrust which is an essential component for power generation. The problem in the first unit of the project has come at a time when the power starved state is already facing severe shortage in supply.

However, in what can be termed as a respite, the second unit of the project has already started functioning. Lyngdoh also informed that the third unit is expected to be commissioned in September this year.

The project which is being executed by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has already been criticized owing to repeated delays in its commissioning leading to a huge cost escalation from the earlier proposed Rs 363.08 crore to Rs 1173.13 crore.
