NGOs observe ‘Black Flag Day’

 NONGSTOIN: The Next phase of Agitation against the anomalies in the Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme would be announced on the 10th August, 2012 by the NGO’s and the Synjuk of Village Councils of Nongstoin area.

A mass rally was organized on Thursday at Nongstoin as part of the “Black Flag Day” called by various NGOs of West Khasi Hills- KSU, FKJGP and the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong and several other village councils from Nongstoin to mark a protest against the irregularities in the Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme (NUWSS).

In the gathering that saw a mammoth crowd of over 2000 people, Chairman of the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Shri H Marwein questioned the present Civil Engineer (CE) as to how and why he had changed the scheme that had already been approved and sanctioned earlier. He also said that they were not against the Government but demanded the right to have what is entitled to us, “ We also demand the Government to remove away the thorn which has blocked the development flow in Nongstoin” Marwein said. Other speakers at the meeting included T Byrsat Myntri Mawkhlaw Nongpyndeng, T S Shangrit President WYF also a Spoke Person of the four NGO’s and K.P.Waniang Sordar Mawkadiang village. In their speech they said that the total amount of the scheme has been deducted by the CE on the basis of the population of Nongstoin by the year 2045. Earlier the former CE, H Prasad and the Additional C E Hooroo had signed and approved that the total expected population of Nongstoin by the year 2045 would be around 2 lakh.

However, with the stepping in of the new C E, the total projected population of Nongstoin by the year 2045 has been reduced to a meagre 60,000 only, they alleged.

They alleged that the total amount of Rs 133.94 crore has been reduced. The C E had replied that the total no of packages in the scheme are eight including the sub packages, they alleged. As of now only one package has been released and the amount for the same amounted to Rs 16 crore.
