Tribute to the war heroes

From Our Correspondent

TURA : Facing all odds, three gallant bikers from Tura along with the Rhino Riders, a Guwahati based bikers club, travelled on their Royal Enfields to Jammu, Srinagar and Kargil to pay tribute to the brave martyrs of the Kargil War.

The three riders from Tura, Tithue Ch Momin, Debajit Rudra Sangma and Grahambell A Sangma, who are also members of the Rhino Riders told The Shillong Times that, 17 riders from their club rode all the way to Kargil Memorial to pay their respects to the noble war heroes who had valiantly sacrificed their lives for the country.

On reaching the Kargil Memorial grounds, the Rhino Riders held a humble homage ceremony and placed a specially made Assamese stoal with the emblem of the Rhino Riders woven into it on the cenotaph and also lit candles remembering the brave soldiers who had fallen in the war. A minute of silence was observed and in the end, all the 17 riders sang the National Anthem to salute the heroes.

Later, the three riders travelled on, along with the rest of the team to conquer the highest motorable pass in the world, Khardung La.

“It was a difficult journey with various life threatening hurdles on the way but we are glad to have completed the journey successfully” said Tithue Momin.

The three riders from Tura who had started their journey to Kargil on June 27 safely arrived back in town on July 22.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated across the country on Thursday in honour of the Kargil War heroes who fought against Pakistan in the 1999 war.
