TURA: In view of the shortage of coins of small denominations in the region, the State Bank of India (SBI) Tura branch distributed loose change in exchange for notes at the Tura Supermarket here on Friday.

Bank officials distributed coins in the denominations of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 and also gave away fresh currency notes in exchange for the older ones.

SBI said that, taking into account the genuine shortage of coins and need for loose change, a directive was given to the Reserve Bank of India in Guwahati which in turn sent out the required quantity to the SBI Tura.

It may be mentioned that due to shortage of change, shopkeepers were forced to hand out candies to customers even in the face of much protest.
